Kitchens are hubs for social contact and family life. They also pose challenges, particularly in communal shelters, in terms of usability, cleanliness, and creating space for people’s varied cultural and personal approaches to food. This section considers both individual and communal kitchens with the goal of offering strategies that lead to kitchens being a healthy place to nourish body and spirit.
